Gottfried Helnwein Retrospective Exhibition
Albertina Museum, Vienna albertina.at/jart/prj3/alberti…

This exhibition will display about 200 works from 1969 to the present.

Exhibition opening: May 24th, 2013
closes: October 13th, 2013

"Well, the world is a haunted house, and Helnwein at times is our tour guide through it. Not all of Gottfried's work is on a canvas. A lot of it is the way he's approached life. And it doesn't take someone knowing him to know that. You take one look at the paintings and you say "this guy has been around." You can't sit in a closet - and create this. This level of work is earned. As an artist my strongest reaction to Helnwein's work is that it challenges me to be better at what I do. There are very few people that achieve utter excellence in what they do. And I think that Gottfried Helnwein is certainly one of those people."

The Museo Nacional de San Carlos (English: National Museum of San Carlos) is a Mexican national art museum devoted to European art, located in the Cuauhtémoc borough in Mexico City. The museum is housed in the Palacio del Conde de Buenavista, a neoclassical building at Puente de Alvarado No. 50, Colonia Tabacalera, Mexico City. It contains works by Lucas Cranach the Elder, Parmigianino, Frans Hals, Anthony Van Dyck, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Auguste Rodin and other well-known European painters and sculptors.

Thanks to everyone for the nice Birthday wishes!

I am painting flat out right now to finish all the paintings for an upcoming solo-exhibition in San Francisco, opening in 3 weeks.

Here are the details if you can make it: www.helnwein.com/news/calendar…

Anna by gottfriedhelnwein received a DD recently, thank you.

Thanks to everyone for commenting. Many of you had questions, especially about the painting technique, each of which I can't answer in detail otherwise I would never be painting.

You are welcome to visit helnwein.com www.helnwein.com where you will find many interviews, articles and information to help answer your questions. You can also visit my youtube channel www.youtube.com/gottfriedhelnw… which features many interviews and footage of me working in the studio.

Technique in art is of little importance to me, what matters is if it reaches someone on an emotional and aesthetic level.

Much love and stay creative,

Gottfried

p.s. here are 2 close ups of the painting "Anna".

INFERNO OF THE INNOCENTS
Gottfried Helnwein - Retrospective

January 29-April 24, 2011

Like a modern-day Goya, Gottfried Helnwein's art addresses themes of inhumanity, violence and the virtue of personal expression. Over more than four decades, the artist has pursued a singular, radical vision realized in monumental paintings and photographs. With stark and probing psychological intensity, he critiques not only the past, but present-day veneers, jolting us from the comfort of complacency. Such confrontations are informed by his upbringing in post-war Vienna, Austria — an experience that fueled the artist's passion for truth and tolerance. Today, Helnwein immerses himself in our ever-changing cultural landscape, working from his studio in Los Angeles.
